Mawlynnong

September, 2018

Mawlynnong is a small village about 90 kms away from Shillong. It suddenly came into limelight when it was declared as ‘The Cleanest Village in Asia’ a few years ago. I don’t know if that still holds true but that is not even important.

This tiny little village was a real eye opener for me. It made me think how different the lifestyle of people living in cities is compared to a village like this. This village is #goals when it comes to sustainable living. Assuming that this would be another tourist attraction, I figured the government must be keeping it clean to promote tourism.  But no, after talking to the locals I realized that it wasn’t the government doing that, but the villagers; every single person – young and old, everyone.

It took them years to reach here. They built proper sanitation systems on their own and even today each household cleans not only their own space, but also the common areas, every single day! Of course, the village is spick and span.

Such clean roads!
That's how its done!
Every corner here is clean and green!
Sightseeing
  • Living Root Bridge. A very easy hike of about 10 mins will take you to this bridge. If you cannot hike to the Double Decker Root Bridge, do add this one to your itinerary. Root bridges are a spectacle and a must-go if you are in Meghalaya.

  • Sky View Point. This view point is made of bamboo sticks. On a clear day, you get a 360 degree view of the area around and also our neighbour, Bangladesh. A fee of Rs 20/- is charged to get to the view point.

  • Homestays. Mawlynnong has a number of homestays. Even if you do not have time to stay overnight, do plan a meal there. The home cooked food is amazing.
FYI: Homestays are closed on Sundays.
  • Balancing rock of Mawlynnong. Another wonder is this self balancing rock, as a huge bolder rests on a small stone. This is quite similar to Krishna’s butter ball balancing rock in Mahabalipuram.
