Double Decker Root Bridge

September, 2018

Let’s get started with understanding what are root bridges? Khasi tribals direct roots to grow in a certain way such that over the course of time, they form a bridge. A root bridge takes years to form and thats what makes them special. There are many root bridges around Shillong, this one is the most popular due to the Double Decker structure (I also noticed a third layer being built on the top!!)

The double decker root bridge!
How to reach?

The trek starts from a village named Tyrna and ends at Nongriat.

Tyrna is about 65 kms away from Shillong. You can take a shared or private cab from Shillong to Cherrapunji and then a private cab from Cherrapunji to Tyrna. Buses are available but they are infrequent.

Tip : Google Maps directions to Tyrna are misleading. Cross-check with a local.

And the trek begins!

The Trek

This one is a moderately difficult trek as the stairs are small and steep. The way to the bridge is mostly downhill. First half of the trek is very steep but the second half is relatively easy.

Endless stairs..
..and the views!

The views on the way are breathtaking! You will also cross some single root and suspended bridges on the way.

This one was scary!
Such pit stops 🙂

The bridge is surrounded by mini waterfalls and natural pools. It is an ideal place for a swim. If you have time, you can spend the night at a homestay in Nongriat village and trek to Rainbow Falls the next day.

Never getting enough of these views!

Tips
  • Carry an umbrella. If not rain, you will need it for the harsh sun.
  • Start on time. The sun sets early in the east.
Happy Hiking 🙂
